State Legislature Tackles Redistricting

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- The House Committee on State Government is expected to consider legislation Thursday that would redraw political boundaries around congressional districts.

No firm time has been set for the meeting, except that it will be immediately after the full House adjourns for the day.

Redistricting occurs every 10 years to account for population changes. In Kentucky, lawmakers have sole discretion in changing boundary lines.

Several proposals have been bandied about in the House and Senate, but no consensus has been reached.

Democratic House Speaker Greg Stumbo of Prestonsburg has floated a plan that would make substantial geographical realignments. Republican Senator Damon Thayer of Georgetown offered an alternative that would make only minor changes to boundary lines to accommodate population shifts of the past decade.
