LOUISVILLE — Columbus J. “Colonel” Hyde, 91, of Louisville died May 9, 2008, at Baptist Hospital East.
He was born Dec. 19, 1916, in Kentucky and was a military veteran. Col. Hyde was a retired chief of police of the Louisville Division Police Department from 1968-1971; and retired director of Safety and Security for the Housing Authority of Louisville. He was head of 14 civic and fraternal organizations. He was a founder and first president of the old Louisville Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was past grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky from 1961-62, past master of Sunset Lodge No. 915 in 1951, past president of Downtown High Twelve Club in 1950-51, past president of High Twelve International in 1960-61, past potentate of Kosair Shrine Temple in 1966, former member of Governing Board of Old Masons Home, former member of Governing Board for Masonic Widows & Orphans Home and a member of the United States Pistol Team at Camp Perry, Ohio, in 1957. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Kentucky American Legion in 1966, the Outstanding Service Award by the Great Onyx Job Corps in 1967, the Commendable Service Award by Woodmen of the World Fraternal Insurance Association in 1968, the Recognition Award for work in Field of Adult Corrections by the Kentucky Council on Crime & Delinquency in 1969, the Outstanding Service Award by the Greater Louisville Labor Council in 1969, the Brotherhood Award by the National Conference of Christians & Jews in 1971, the Law Enforcement Award Optimist International by Kenwood Optimist Club in 1968, and was a member of the Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a graduate and former president of the FBI National Academy in Washington, D.C., in 1955, and also former president of his class with the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville. He was a 33rd degree mason. He is preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Ford Hyde; a son-in-law, Fred R. Pletcher; and a great-granddaughter, April Dawn Hayden.
Funeral was today at Highlands Family Owned Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, with burial in Resthaven Mausoleum.

He is survived by a son, James Tazwell Hyde and his wife, Louise, of Louisville; three daughters, Juanita Ellen Bingemer and her husband, Charles, of Henderson and Bettie Marie Pletcher and M. Annette Gibbs and her husband, Harold, of Louisville; numerous nieces and nephews, including Jim Hyde and his wife, Scotty, of Bowling Green; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
