Jack Conway on Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Health Care

"The question for me," Conway said, "becomes is that the smartest use of our resources? Are we putting our brave men and women in a position where they can win? Where they can achieve a sustainable victory? I'm not all that interested in controlling the Afghani countryside. I am interested in making sure al-Quaida doesn't come back, and making sure Afghanistan doesn't reemerge as a safehaven for al-Quaida."

Conway says he's concerned that al-Quiada is now in Pakistan, and not enough U.S. dollars are funding the efforts there.

"I think we may have our priorities misaligned," he said. What I want to see is a thorough discussion of all the issues and maybe, rather than ramping up an additional 30,000 men and women to go over there, maybe we need to shift some of those resources to where the true enemy is located."

The Attorney General says he also wants to see health care serving the people who need it the most.

"The people who need health care the most," Conway said,"are the ones who can't get it right now. And when they have it now and they become sick, they lose it. So we need to address the insurance reforms. We need to address portability, we need to address access to quality health care, we need to make sure people can get access to health care if they have preexisting conditions and we need to control costs. And we need some mechanism in the plan that puts the pressure on the insurance companies and creates additional competition so they can control costs."

And Conway says maybe we should also look at the ability to buy insurance across state lines, creating competition in our own market.
