The Pentagon says U.S. troops might stay in Iraq longer than planned if elections there are delayed.
The elections are set for January 16. U.S. military commanders have said they want to keep the 117,000 soldiers now there for some two months afterward.
But the balloting might be delayed because of a political deadlock over how to register voters in Kirkuk (keer-KOOK') province. The deadlock stems from tensions between Arabs and Kurds.
Anthony Cordesman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies also notes recent bombings. He says they show that "the Iraq war is scarcely over."
President Barack Obama has set a deadline of next Aug. 31 to end U.S. combat missions in Iraq. All U.S. troops will leave by the end of 2011.
