Coal companies in Kentucky are taking an unusual stand by urging lawmakers to pass legislation to increase the fees for mining permit applications.
The legislation would cost coal companies an additional $800,000 a year, which would be used to help pay the operational costs of the Kentucky Division of Mine Permits.
Kentucky Natural Resources Deputy Commissioner Larry Arnett says the coal industry recognizes the need to bolster staffing so that applications for mining permits can be processed faster.
Kentucky Coal Association President Bill Bissett says the mining industry knows the state needs more money to accomplish its mission.
The legislation cleared the House last month and won approval Tuesday from the Senate Appropriations and Revenue Committee.
