A top Kentucky Senate budget writer is hinting at the possibility of broad budget cuts as senators review the $17.5 billion, two-year budget passed by the House.

Senate budget committee chairman Bob Leeper told reporters Tuesday that spending cuts could reach "across the board." He said that elementary and secondary education is a top priority, but said everything is on the table as senators look for cutbacks.

Leeper said he hasn't seen Senate support for a package of revenue enhancements passed by the House that's aimed at generating an extra $371 million in the coming two years.

The Senate budget committee reviewed the House's budget plan Tuesday.

Some committee members spoke in favor of restoring two classroom days for kindergarten through high school. The House proposed dropping the two days in order to save about $36 million each year.
