Under the bill, certain drug offenders would be blocked for five years from purchasing cold medicines commonly used in making meth.

Those medicines contain ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, which are an essential ingredient in making the illicit drug.

The measure sailed through the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

The bill would also limit a person's monthly purchase of medicine containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine to no more than 7 1/2 grams. The current limit is 9 grams per month.

The legislation is Senate Bill 211.
