Recent events at Adair County High School have some parents and students concerned. It all started several weeks ago when a bomb threat was found scribbled on the girl's restroom wall.
Recently a utility knife was found above ceiling tiles in the school and vandalism to the school occurred late Tuesday, Dec. 4.
This has become the talk of the town in Columbia.
"The rumors started a few days ago," said Officer Jimmy Luttrell, with the Adair County Police Department.
It all started three weeks ago when writing on the girls restroom wall said the school would be blown up on December 10. This has caused concern and rumors at the school.
"Rumors about finding knives and guns and different things in lockers and the school," said Zackary Giles, a senior at Adair County High School.
Giles says the bomb threat found on a girl's restroom wall has some of his classmates worried.
"I've heard a lot of students say they weren't going to be here the 10th," Giles said.
This comes after a utility work knife was found above ceiling tiles in a classroom, which had been used to install insulation around the high school heating and cooling units two years ago.
"After that, the rumors started circulating that weapons had been found," Officer Jimmy Luttrell explained.
But Officer Luttrell says it was just another rumor topped off by yet another event at the high school.
"Last night there was some vandalism at the high school, there were five or six windows broken out. They were broken out with rocks being thrown through the windows," Luttrell added.
School officials say this is nothing to be worried about and they are ensuring that students are safe.
"More police presence at the school. We've also had the bomb
detection dogs brought in by Kentucky State Police on Monday. They went through the school, and those dogs will be brought back before school on Monday and the school will be searched by police officers to make sure there's nothing in the building," said Brenda Mann, the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services in Adair County.
A fact that makes this student feel a lot better about being at school.
"I'll be here," Giles said.
The student who wrote the threatening message on the bathroom wall is no longer enrolled at Adair County High School.
If you have any information on the vandalism at the school Tuesday night, you're asked to call the Adair County police at (270) 384-4119.
