A number of kids in south-central Kentucky are vaccinated following some of the first H1N1 clinics in schools there.

Vaccination clinics took place Wednesday for schools in the Lake Cumberland District Health Department's area.

Taylor County school officials say they were pleased with the number of kids getting vaccinated.

They say about 40-percent of the students had permission slips signed and were in line for a vaccination.

"We aren't taking any chances," said Kris Balsan,

Kris Balsan is a mom who says she's never been one to take risks.

That's why she's at Taylor County Elementary getting her three young kids vaccinated.

"A friend of mine I've known since middle school from Wyoming, her youngest daughter who's six-months old has got it," she said.

H1N1 is becoming a growing concern for parents everywhere, so health officials brought the vaccinations to the schools.

"I think it's a wonderful opportunity and I'm glad to see parents taking advantage of it," said Susan Kilby, assistant superintendent at Taylor County.

Kilby says flu season has certainly taken its toll on her students.

"We had to close the school for two days in early October," Kilby said.

She says school clinics are a way to keep kids out of the doctor's office and in the classroom.

"It's just a win-win for everybody," she said.

The Lake Cumberland District Health Department is urging all parents to get their kids vaccinated.

"We are a ten-county district, and we have had five school districts to close so it's definitely making an impact, illness is. So we're encouraging that they participate in allowing their children to receive the vaccine," said Monica Hall, a nurse administrator for the Lake Cumberland District Health Dept.

Kris Balsan agrees.

She says her kids getting the swine flu is a chance she just won't take.

"These are our kids, our responsibility. Parents need to get their kids vaccinated," she said.

For schools in the Lake Cumberland District Health Department's area, a clinic with be held for middle and high school students on November 20th from 9a.m. until 2p.m. at each school.
