Students in Allen County get a few extra days of summer vacation .

A delay in the shipment of geo-thermal equipment is forcing Allen County schools to open on Aug. 6, 2007, rather than Aug. 2 as originally scheduled.

Allen County Superintendent, Randall Jackson, said the start date had to be pushed back.

He said there's been a delay in the shipment of some key components of new geothermal units being installed at James E. Bazzel Middle School.

Faculty and staff will still report Aug. 1 as scheduled, but again Allen County schools will not open until Monday, Aug. 6.

Dozens of districts, including Houston's, have already incorporated the concept into "pay for performance" systems. Education leaders in New York City and the District of Columbia are moving toward linking it to tenure or dismissals. But none has gone ahead as boldly as the Texas district.
