"Some people that have Autism, they can't help that they were born with that disability and its not their fault, because they're special on the inside," Dylan Beckham explains.
Katie Chance has Autism. She didn't talk until she was four years old. There's a local eleven year old boy who wants to make sure kids like Katie don't get picked on.
"Dylan Beckham is one of the greatest 11 year olds you'll ever meet in your life," one of Dylan's teacher's tells us.
Dylan became an advocate against bullying when he saw one of his friends being bullied. "I saw one of my friends at school and he was getting picked on and I didn't think that was too cool."
Now Dylan has many supporters backing him. "The first time I met Dylan and heard about his dream, it was so genuine. He melted my heart," a teacher said.
What stands out to others is Dylan's genuine want to help others. "He doesn't like the limelight, he does not like to be interviewed. That's where we know that its coming from his heart," says Dylan's mother.
Dylan explains further, "I went home and I told my parents: I want to be a voice for this kid because I don't want him living with scars on the inside for the rest of his life."
Now Dylan is speaking on a bigger stage, and has been asked to help with events like Bowling Green's 2010 Run for Autism. What's more, others are seeing the difference Dylan is making. "There are little kids who have heard his message and have been bullied who have said 'That's my hero right there.'
"I've just known him for a long time and then when he started doing the autism then I realized that that was better for people not to treat people the way that they used to," Dylan's friend Cade says.
He's even touched those who were former bulliers. "Some people actually were bulliers and they actually started helping people like that. Being friends with them, playing on the playground, shooting basketball," Dylan says.
Dylan's mother shares with us, "His first quote when he started this was 'I just want to be a voice.' And I'm just glad its being heard."
We honor Dylan Beckham as this week's Hometown Hero.
