There's a sea of black and gold at Red Cross Elementary. Today is "Matt Goldsmith Day", as the school honors this 11-year-old 5th grader, fighting a rare form of cancer, called Ewings Sarcoma.

"I didn't know what to do," said Matt's friend, fellow 5th grader Isaac Decker. "I was scared."

Decker decided he wanted to help out. So he created t-shirts and sold them. They went like hot cakes, too. He sold more than $800 dollars worth.

"I was hoping for at least 50 bucks," he said. "I had no idea I was going to get a lot more."

The news of Matt's condition got out into the community too. When the people of Barren County heard about Matt, more donations started pouring in.

"Donations from the community and staff have totaled over $2,000," said Guidance Counselor Erica Nesbitt.

Nesbitt says she can't believe how much support the Goldsmith family has raised. She says they'll definitely be able to use the money.

"He's back at Kosair's getting his third chemo treatment," she said.

It's something that's become a pretty common occurrence for Matt. Since his diagnoses, he has to get the treatments every ten days. The treatments will continue for the next nine months.

"Our goal is just to let Matt know he's still a big part of our class," said Robin Davis.

Robin Davis is Matt's social studies teacher, and also visits him at home since he can't be at school. Her class has made cards and talked to Matt through his Facebook page. She says he's handling the situation as well as can be expected.

"He has times where it's hard because he can't do things kids his age do, but he's keeping his spirits up," Davis said.
