BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — With the spring football season completed, the next major project for the WKU Hilltoppers’ progression into Conference USA, the turf replacement on Feix Field, is set to begin on Monday.
Set to begin as early as 7 a.m. on Monday morning, the project is expected to take roughly six weeks and when completed, Hilltopper student-athletes will be treated to any entirely new playing surface inside Houchens Smith-L.T. Smith Stadium.
The nation’s leader in artificial turf surface, FieldTurf will be leading the project utilizing their state-of-the-art FieldTurf Revoltion surface. Voted the top artificial turf surface by the NFLPA for 10 consecutive years, 22 NFL teams play or practice on FieldTurf.
“Replacing the turf on Feix Field is another example of our commitment to maintaining a first-rate college football program at WKU,” said Director of Athletics Todd Stewart. “I have been extremely proud of the way Jeff Brohm has handled his first four months as our head football coach, and a new playing surface inside the stadium continues to help him develop our student-athletes into the best young men that they can be. It will also pay dividends as we move into C-USA with new opponents coming to Bowling Green for the first time. The field also helps many of our student-athletes from teams other than football as our soccer and track teams frequently utilize the Houchens-Smith playing surface to train on.”
In March, Hilltopper fans were given the opportunity to vote on the colors of the new endzones, and they will see those results come to fruition at the conclusion of the project. With three options on the table, Black was the overwhelming favorite, securing nearly 70-percent of the vote.
Additionally, fans can follow the progress of the project live on WKUSports.com as the department will stream the project 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
