High School Renames Soccer Field for Fallen Soldier

Residents in Butler County took time to honor a fallen soldier with the naming of a soccer field in his memory on Sept. 25.

The soccer field, where Specialist Michael Hayes coached at Butler County High for several years, was officially re-named the Michael Ray Hayes Field.

Hayes' mother and sister were in attendance, as well as the girls' soccer team he coached, before his deployment to Iraq.

His sister said the dedication brings her brother's life full-circle.

"It means everything because I can remember when he came out here and built this field with his bare hands and spent hours doing it. Now with them putting this plaque up, it just means his memory will absolutely never die," said Hayes' sister, Melissa Stewart.

The speakers at the dedication spoke of Hayes' smile and the intense pride he had while serving his country.
