Bowling Green, Ky. — Two starters who hail from Ohio on the Western Kentucky University football team were among the five players named captains Thursday for the Hilltoppers’ game this weekend at Bowling Green.
Dan Cline, a junior from Centerville, and Zach Thuney, a senior who resides in Dayton, will be joined by Cody Hughes, Jamar Jones and Andre Lewis. This will be the third occasion in 2007 that the latter has been selected to serve as captain — he also filled the role in wins over West Virginia Tech and Middle Tennessee — while Cline and Thuney have been chosen for the second time after also being designated captains for the WVU Tech contest.
Cline recorded a pair of tackles last time out when WKU earned a road victory at Middle Tennessee, including a sack for a 10-yard loss, as he has posted at least one stop behind the line of scrimmage in every game this year. Lewis was credited with a season-best nine stops against the Blue Raiders, with one for loss — the senior from Madison, Tenn., is tied for the team lead in total tackles entering the BGSU contest.
Thuney graded out at 89 percent overall with a 94 percent production grade in the MT victory, as he was one of four Topper offensive linemen to be in on every snap. Hughes, a sophomore from Bradenton, Fla., who also did not sit out a play, received a 91 percent grade while posting 12 knockdown blocks.
Jones, an Arcadia, Fla., native, has caught one pass through the Toppers’ first four contests — the senior has seen action in every game thus far this season.
The game against Bowling Green will kick off at 5 p.m. (CDT) Saturday.
