Troy, Ala. – Five goals in the second half help the Western Kentucky University women’s soccer team defeat Troy Friday afternoon 6-0.

With the victory the Lady Toppers move to 8-1-1, 3-0 on the year, while Troy falls to 5-7, 1-2. WKU extends its winning streak to six matches.

“We played fantastic tonight,” said head coach Jason Neidell. “It was definitely our best performance of the year for the full 90 minutes. We are excited about the victory and we took a step forward to becoming a better team.”

WKU was held to only one goal in the first half. Rachel Freidman found the foot of Kristin Cocchiarella for the Lady Toppers first goal of the evening at the 35 minute mark.

Cocchiarella would add her second goal of the match just seven minutes after half time. Jamie Silverberg found Cocchiarella off a set piece. With the goal, Cocchiarella moves into sixth all-time in points in a career and tied for fourth all-time in goals in a career in the Lady Topper record book.

Cocchiarella’s first career goal came at Troy two years ago.

Four minutes later, Silverberg found Amanda Buechel for the third goal of the evening. Buechel leads the Lady Toppers with six goals on the year and moves into a tie for 10th all-time for goals scored in a season in school history.

Alicia Dalby added her fifth goal of the season off a pass from Mallory Outerbridge.

Danielle Hogue collected her first two goals of her career in the 69th and 77th minute. Her first goal deflected off a Lady Trojan and found the back of the net. Freidman and Nikki Workman found Hogue for her second goal.

The Lady Toppers out shot the Lady Trojans 27 to two.

Meredith Goodson picked up the victory for the Lady Toppers allowing no goals and collecting one save.

“Troy gave us a unique set of challenges that we haven’t seen before,” stated Neidell. “They were very organized defensively.”

The Lady Toppers will be in action again on Sunday as they face the Lady Jaguars of South Alabama at 1 p.m. (CDT) in Mobile.
