Many college basketball programs like to kickoff its first fall practice with flashing lights, a dunk contest and a packed arena full of fans. WKU, however, decided to keep things low-key this year.

The Hilltoppers quietly went about their business Friday evening, their first organized team practice of the season. The practice was closed to the general public with limited access to the media. Fans will get the chance to see the Hilltoppers up close October 25 during the team's open scrimmage.

"I just think when we do our scrimmage on October 25, I think the fans are going to enjoy it more because we've had some time to teach and practice and I think we'll get more out of it as a team because we've put that time in," said WKU head hasketball coach Darrin Horn.

Friday's practice also marked the official debut of three incoming freshman to the Hilltoppers: B.J. Frazier, Steffphon Pettigrew and D.J. Magley.

"The first college practice of course is a lot different than a high school practice just because it's a lot more intense, more players out there, players about the same size, so it was a lot more intense and it was fun and I loved it," said Magley.

WKU enters the season in search of its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2003. And for six seniors, the 2007-08 season will be their final chance to reach the "Big Dance".

"You can ask any senior around the country, the sense of urgency is there," said senior forward Courtney Lee. "I haven't been to the tournament yet and that's our goal, so definetly the sense of urgency is there."

The Hilltoppers open the season Thursday, November 1 at E.A. Diddle Arena against Campbellsville in exhibition play.
