If the Gators ever needed motivation to win a football game, they got it just hours before kickoff Friday night.

Greenwood head coach Mark Nelson missed the entire first half of the Gators battle with Central Hardin after his son, Clayton, was electrocuted in his home earlier in the day. He was flown to Vanderbilt Medical Central where he was released the same night.

Upon hearing the news of his son's injury, Greenwood's football game was the last thing on Nelson's mind.

"Once I heard that my son was hurt, I just got in my car and left," said Nelson. "You have to remember that this is just a game...he's more important to me than anything. So this is a great win tonight but it keeps things in perspective."

Nelson emerged from Greenwood's lockerroom just before the second half when both the Gators and the Bruins had yet to score. The Gators finally broke through in the third quarter when William Comer scored on a short touchdown run to give Greenwood the 7-0 lead.

The Gator defense did the rest, holding Central Hardin to just three points the entire game.

"Our defense stepped up tonight and we had a great week of practice with them and the way they performed tonight was big for us, said Nelson.

The victory clinches Greenwood's first district championship in school history, guaranteeing the Gators at least two home games in the playoffs.

"Coming back here at halftime and watching the kids perform in the second half...it's just a great thing for our school and our kids to have their first district championship in football," said Nelson.

Senior Cory Henon led the way for the Gators, rushing for 101 yards on 16 carries and recording an interception that led to Greenwood's only score of the game.

The Gators (5-4, 3-1 Class 6A District 2) return to action November 2nd at Scott County, while the Bruins (4-4, 0-4) host Ohio County next Friday.
