Bowling Green, Ky. — Courtney Lee and Matt Maresca both recorded 11 points and five rebounds Thursday to lead the Red to a 43-33 victory over the White in Western Kentucky University’s basketball preseason intrasquad scrimmage at E.A. Diddle Arena.
D.J. Magley added a game-high 12 points for the Red, which shot 53.1 percent overall and forced 12 turnovers in the 20-minute contest.
Boris Siakam paced the White with nine points and a game-best eight rebounds, while Steffphon Pettigrew collected nine points and B.J. Frazier chipped in with eight.
“Overall I think we looked good,” said WKU head coach Darrin Horn, who is entering his fifth season on the Hill. “Obviously when you’re missing four guys — including several who will contribute for us this year — it’s not going to be the prettiest game. Overall we did a good job, but we still have a long way to go.”
After Lee and Frazier traded three-pointers in the opening minute-and-a-half, the Red scored eight consecutive points — including back-to-back baskets from Magley — over a two-minute span as its lead never dipped below four points the rest of the way. Lee’s three-pointer with just under 14 minutes remaining extended the advantage to 18-7 for the Red’s first double-digit advantage of the night.
Down 20-9 a minute later following a Maresca layup, the White scored six unanswered points to make it a five-point game with 11:46 to go. Pettigrew accounted for half the points with the first of his two three-pointers, while Siakam scored the rest with three free throws.
A.J. Slaughter found Lee for an alley-oop dunk and a 25-16 lead with 10-and-a-half minutes to go, and when Maresca added a layup a half-minute later the Red was up 27-16 at the midway point.
Maresca connected on 5-of-9 from the floor, adding three assists and two steals.
A layup by Magley at 7:39 put the Red up 29-20 before the White used a 5-0 run to get as close as it would the rest of the way. Pettigrew hit a three with just over six minutes to go, then — following Magley’s only miss of the game — found Japeth Aguilar for a layup 22 seconds later after pulling down the rebound to make the score 29-25 with 5:47 remaining.
The Red scored seven straight points to put the game away, however. Magley’s layup with just over two minutes left gave the Red its largest lead at 40-28, a margin that was matched with 40 seconds remaining after Maresca sank a three-pointer from the left wing.
In addition to going 6-of-7 from the floor, Magley blocked two shots. Adam Howard collected seven points, three assists and two rebounds, while Slaughter also handed out three assists.
Aguilar finished with four points and four boards for the White, with Tyrone Brazelton handing out three assists. Siakam was 2-of-3 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line, adding two assists and a steal.
The White shot 43.5 percent from the field.
The Hilltoppers return to action when they play Campbellsville Thursday at 7 p.m. (CDT) in the first of two preseason exhibition games at Diddle Arena.
