Bowling Green, Ky. — The Western Kentucky University women‘s soccer team defeated North Texas 1-0 in overtime off a header by Morgan Thomas from an Alicia Dalby corner kick in the 98th minute of the match.
“We knew going in that North Texas is a very athletic and aggressive team and we knew we would have to battle for 90 minutes,” said head coach Jason Neidell. “We told our team that we will find a way.”
With the win, WKU moves to 13-1-2 overall and 8-0-1 in conference action and remain on top of the Sun Belt Conference standings. The Mean Green fall to 13-4, 7-2.
“We knew that it was going to be a battle all the way through the match,” stated Thomas. “We had some opportunities and we took advantage of the last one we had.”
The goal for Thomas was her fourth of the season — all of which she has struck with her head. Dalby’s assist moves her into second all-time in the Lady Topper record book for assists in a career.
Both teams managed to fire 12 shots. WKU saw six shots at the net while North Texas only saw four.
Goalkeeper Meredith Goodson recorded four saves on the night. Five minutes into the overtime period, Goodson stopped a Mean Green attack on a break-away.
“Morgan was dominate in the air on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball for us,” said Neidell.
The Lady Toppers will look to stay unbeaten in conference play on Sunday against Denver. The kickoff is slated to begin at 1 p.m. (CDT) with Senior day ceremonies taking place 20 minutes before the match begins.
