Bowling Green, Ky. — Western Kentucky University sophomore guard Kenzie Rich was named the season’s first Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday. It marks the first time in her career that Rich has earned the league’s weekly honor.
Rich helped lead the Lady Toppers to a season-opening victory over East Tennessee State last Friday in the opening round of the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The 5-foot-7 guard finished the night 6-for-9 from the field, 4-for-5 from behind the arc and 7-for-8 at the free throw line as the Lady Toppers advanced in the tournament with a 90-73 victory. Her seven made free throws were a career best. After going a perfect 3-for-3 from long range in the first half, Rich dropped in 14 of her points in the 15 minutes of action in the second half of the victory. It was just the second time in her career that Rich has posted 20 or more points in a game, and her 23 points were three shy of her career high of 26 set against IUPUI last season.
The Lady Toppers will tip it up for the second time in the 2007-08 season tonight as they visit Notre Dame for a 6 p.m. (CST) contest in the Preseason WNIT second round.
