Michael Vick Gets 23 Months in Prison

NFL player Michael Vick will stay behind bars until 2009.

Three weeks ago, he turned himself in voluntarily to begin serving his prison term for his role in an illegal dog fighting ring.

At his federal prison sentencing on Dec. 10, lawyers for the former Atlanta Falcon's football star were able to anticipate the outcome.

But there was no way to stop what is likely the hardest hit of Vick's career, 23 months in prison.

"We're hopeful that with good time, he'll be released within 18 months," explained Billy Martin, Vick's attorney.

Vick appeared in court in a jail uniform where he apologized to the court, his family and his kids.

The 27-year-old pro-bowler has been suspended indefinitely from the NFL.

It is uncertain if he will ever play again.
