Bowling Green, Ky. — When the Western Kentucky University women’s basketball team takes the court against Troy on Thursday night, WKU is hoping to see E.A. Diddle Arena filled with pink — but not because of Valentine’s Day. The Lady Toppers will be taking part in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s 2008 “Think Pink” campaign aimed at raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
“We are so excited that WKU and Lady Topper Basketball are able to be a part of the WBCA “Think Pink” campaign. None of us ever know what challenges lie ahead for us or members of our family, therefore breast cancer awareness and prevention is so important,” said Lady Topper head coach Mary Taylor Cowles. “It is going to be a fun night for a good cause, filled with exciting Lady Topper Basketball. Wear your pink, grab your red towels and help us be a part of the fight against breast cancer.”
Fans are encouraged to wear pink, and WKU will provide “Think Pink” t-shirts courtesy of Russell Athletic to the first 1,000 people to come through the gates on Thursday. Other surprises are planned throughout the game. Over 900 teams are taking part in this year’s “Think Pink” initiative, which officially began on Feb. 8.
Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer; and every 13 minutes a woman will die from breast cancer in the United States. This year around 2,030 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer; and of those more than 450 will die.
“The ‘Think Pink’ concept has been gaining momentum nationally. WKU is proud to participate in this most worthy cause and promotion to raise awareness of breast cancer and support efforts to educate and research for a cure. ” said WKU Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig. “We also thank our partners at Russell Athletic and Fruit of the Loom for their significant contributions and support of our program and fan base. It will be a night to remember for all who attend the game — fittingly enough on Valentine’s Day. I would encourage everyone to bring a Valentine’s Day date to Diddle Arena.”
Ticket’s for Thursday’s game can be purchased by calling the WKU Ticket Office at (270) 745-5222 or 1-800-5 BIG RED. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.wkusports.com. The Lady Toppers enter the game against Troy with an 18-6 overall record and lead the Sun Belt Conference East Division with an 11-1 league mark.
