Bowling Green, Ky. — The Western Kentucky University softball team begins a new era on Thursday as first-year head coach Tyra Perry take on No. 4 Arizona State in Tempe at 7 p.m. (CST).
“We are all excited to kick off the 2008 season,” Perry said. “After several weeks of scrimmaging each other in practice, the team is pumped to finally play outside competition. We face a challenge in Arizona State right off the bat, and several other top teams throughout the tournament, but this group loves the opportunity to face tough opponents. I’m looking forward to a competitive weekend.”
After battling the Sun Devils, the Hilltoppers will take part in the Kajikawa Classic — also in Tempe — beginning Friday. On Feb. 15, WKU will face No. 25 Oregon State and Oklahoma State. Saturday, WKU plays Southern Utah and Notre Dame before finishing out the tournament on Sunday against Texas Tech.
This will be the first time in the program’s nine year history that WKU plays Arizona State, Oregon State, Oklahoma State and Southern Utah. They have faced Notre Dame once on March 28, 2004 and took on Texas Tech on March 17, 2001, both were 2-1 losses.
The Hilltoppers are returning preseason Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Year Jennifer Kempf and preseason all-Sun Belt members Rachelle Boucher and Rebecca Horesky.
