Tempe, Ariz. — The Western Kentucky University softball team built an early 2-0 lead against #4 Arizona State, but saw it evaporate in a 11-3 loss on Thursday night at Farrington Stadium.
WKU (0-1) scored two runs in the first, beginning with a Shannon Smith solo homer. Rebecca Horesky followed with a single and later scored on a error by the first baseman.
The Toppers held onto the lead until the fifth inning when ASU (4-1) put up eight runs to go ahead 9-2. Four of those runs came on a grand slam by Rhiannon Baca. Krista Donnenwirth singled through the left side to add two more runs for the inning.
Ashley Contreras started the sixth inning with a walk and later scored on a Horesky double down the left field line to make the contest 9-3.
Jennifer Kempf (0-1) took the loss after 4.1 innings of work, giving up six earned runs and striking out three. Horesky finished 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.
Megan Elliott (2-0) earned the victory for the Sun Devils, pitching six innings, allowing three hits, three runs and striking out five. Jackie Vasquez went 3-for-4 with two runs and Donnenwirth collected three RBI and two hits.
The Hilltoppers will now turn its attention to the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe for five straight games, starting with games against Oregon State at 1:45 p.m. on Friday followed by Oklahoma State at 6:30 p.m.
