Bowling Green, Ky. — The Western Kentucky University baseball team suffered its first loss of the season to Bowling Green State 12-9 in 12 innings after coming from four runs down in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game.
The Hilltoppers fall to 1-1 on the year as do the Falcons.
Down 9-5 with two outs remaining in the bottom of the ninth, Terrence Dayleg scored Scott Kaskie off a double to left center field. The hit sparked four consectutive base hits for the Toppers. Following the double, Chad Cregar added his first hit of the afternoon bringing home Dayleg. J.B. Paxson scored Drew Morgan — who pinched run for Cregar. Rounding out the bottom half of the inning, Wade Gaynor singled in Paxson for the tieing run.
WKU jumped to an early four nothing lead in the third after four consectutive base hits. Jeremy Coleman started off the inning with a single to center field. Matt Payton dug out a bunt down the first base side and advanced Coleman to second in the process. Kaskie recorded his first hit of the day with a single to left advancing both runners. Matt Hightower brought in the first two runs for the Hilltoppers with a double to center field. Dayleg then recorded a single scoring Kaskie before being picked off for the first out of the inning.
Bowling Green used the fourth and fifth innings to cut into the Topper lead and take the advantage. BGSU scored three runs in the fourth. A double by Frank Berry — who also picked up the victory — scored Marty Baird BGSU’s first run. Mark Galvin then flied to left field and would have been the last out of the inning but an error by the Hilltoppers kept the inning alive. Berry scored on the error and Clay Duncan singled to score Galvin.
The fifth seemed just like the fourth for the Toppers. BGSU scored four runs in the inning to take the lead going into the ninth inning. WKU added one run in the sixth when Jake Wells scored Paxson — who doubled earlier in the inning.
Both teams went through the tenth and eleventh innings without a hit. BGSU opened the 12th with a single by Derek Spencer and then Galvin grounded out to third. An intentional walk was awarded to Brandon McFarland and WKU pitcher Rye Davis got Dennis Vaughn to fly out to center field. T.J. Blanton singled in the winning run for the Falcons and Ryan Shay sinlged in two more runs for BGSU in the top of the 12th.
Frank Berry collected the win for BGSU and Davis was credited with the loss.
The two teams will wrap-up the three game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CST).
