Bowling Green, Ky. — Western Kentucky University softball junior pitcher Jennifer Kempf was named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday after her performance in the Mercer Wingate Inn Classic.
The St. Joseph, Mo., native earned her first two victories of the season in convincing fashion as she defeated No. 15 Mississippi State twice in two days. The SBC preseason Pitcher of the Year went all seven innings on Saturday while giving up five hits and just one run. On Sunday, she started the second MSU game and pitched the first 5.1 innings, while allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out two batters for her second victory over the SEC ranked foe. Before the second game against the Bulldogs, Kempf came in relief against Nicholls State and pitched the remaining 5.1 innings and gave up just five hits and no runs.
For the weekend, Kempf pitched 17.2 inning, going 2-0, with one complete game, allowing only two earned runs and having a 0.79 ERA.
The Hilltoppers will be in action this weekend at the UNLV Eller Media Classic starting on Friday in Las Vegas, Nev.
