Clarksville, Tenn. — Jennifer Kempf, Ryan Rogge, and Lauren Caudill pitched two shutouts to lead the Western Kentucky University softball team to victories over Austin Peay. The Hilltoppers won game one 1-0 and game two by the score of 8-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Kempf (3-5) scattered two hits in the shutout victory in game one. She didn’t allow a hit through the first 3.1 innings before giving up a single to Brittany Williams. Kempf then got the next batter to hit into a double play. The other Governor (1-4) hit came on a single in the sixth frame.
The Toppers (9-8) plated the lone run of the contest in the sixth inning when Elizabeth Ferrell tripled to left. She then scored after Kelsey McCauley reached on a error by the shortstop.
Austin Peay’s Ashley Elrod pitched seven innings while allowing one run on five hits.
After a nail-biting first game, the Hilltoppers jumped on the scoreboard early in the second game. A Shannon Smith double scored Antone, after she reached on a fielder’s choice. Shelby Smith then blasted a two-run homer to left center to put WKU up 3-0 after two innings.
The Hilltoppers then loaded the bases in the third, then Antone singled in McCauley, followed by a Sha. Smith groundout to score Rebecca Horesky.
Antone put WKU up 6-0 in the fifth on her fourth homer of the year and then Horesky blasted her fourth home run in the sixth.
Rogge (6-3) pitched five innings, allowing three hits and she struck out six Govs. Caudill pitched the sixth to keep the shutout intact.
Antone finished with four hits on the afternoon and Horesky added three.
WKU will have its home opener on Saturday — with a doubleheader — when it faces Illinois State at 1 p.m. (CST). The series finale will take place at noon on Sunday at the WKU Softball Complex.
