Bowling Green, Ky. — It wasn’t until the final pairings of the field were announced on Monday that the Western Kentucky University women’s basketball team learned that they had earned the 10th seed in the Spokane Region of the 2008 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Lady Toppers will face seventh-seeded UTEP in the first round of the tournament on Saturday (March 22) at Maples Pavilion in Stanford, Calif.
The Lady Toppers and Miners will tip off 30 minutes following a 7:30 p.m. (CDT) game between second-seeded Stanford and 15th-seeded Cleveland State on Saturday evening at Maples Pavilion.
The Lady Toppers earned the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid after winning the conference tournament last week in Mobile, Ala. WKU enters the tournament on a seven-game winning streak, and has won 20 of its last 22 games. This marks the 16th trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Lady Topper program, and the first since 2003.
UTEP will be making its first postseason appearance in the 34-year history of the program. The Miners enter the tournament with a 27-3 overall record, went a perfect 16-0 to win the Conference USA regular-season championship before falling to SMU in the C-USA Tournament finals. UTEP had won 23 straight games before that loss. The Miners are currently ranked 23rd in the Associated Press Poll, and 25th in the most recent ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
The winner of Saturday’s WKU/UTEP game will meet the winner of No. 2 Stanford and 15th-seeded Cleveland State in the second round on Monday.
The WKU Athletic Ticket Office will be taking priority orders — either in person at E.A. Diddle Arena from 8-4:30 p.m. (CDT) or over the phone at 1-800-5-BIG-RED — until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. A maximum of four tickets may be purchased, with individuals who receive first-round tickets required to purchase tickets for the second round as well if WKU advances. The cost is $26 per ticket, with a $4 processing fee for each order.
All tickets will be awarded based on Hilltopper Athletic Foundation priority points.
