Bowling Green, Ky. — After helping the Western Kentucky University baseball team to a three-game weekend sweep of Florida International, junior Chad Cregar and sophomore Matt Ridings were named the Sun Belt Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Cregar had a career day in WKU‘s doubleheader sweep over the Golden Panthers on Saturday. The Hilltopper designated hitter finished 6-for-9 in the two games with four home runs and 12 RBI. Two of Cregar’s long balls were grand slams — one in each game — giving him 11 homer and three grand slams on the season. Cregar drove in a season-high seven runs in the opening game of the twinbill, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs. He went 2-for-4 in the nightcap with two more homers, three runs scored and five RBI. For the series, Cregar hit .500 with a 1.500 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. He now has a team-high 47 RBI to go along with his 11 home runs.
Ridings hurled his first complete game of the season in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader as he allowed one run on just four hits against Florida International. Riding finished the game with nine strikeouts to improve to 6-1 on the season. He did not allow an extra-base hit in the contest, and surrendered just a .133 batting average to the Golden Panthers. Ridings has now thrown four complete games in his Hilltopper career.
WKU — winner of three straight games and eight of its last 10 — will return to action on Tuesday when it takes on Vanderbilt at Hawkins Field in Nashville. The Hilltoppers will return home to face Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday at Nick Denes Field. Both games are slated for 6 p.m. (CDT) starts.
