Birmingham, Ala. — The Western Kentucky University softball team fell to the hands of UAB on Thursday at George Ward Park. WKU dropped the first contest 3-1 and the second game 6-1.

The Hilltoppers move to 14-22 on the season while the Blazers improved to 22-25.

WKU will return to action on Saturday when it heads to Monroe, La., to face Louisiana-Monroe at 4 p.m. (CDT) in a Sun Belt Conference matchup.

In the first game of the twin bill, the Blazers grabbed the lead in the third inning on a Cameron Skates single to right field that scored Kayla Harris and Andrea Rogers to put UAB up 3-1.

Lindsay Antone put the Toppers on the board in the first after she singled up the middle to score Rachelle Boucher. It was Antone’s team-leading 22nd RBI on the year.

Jennifer Kempf (5-9) went the distance and allowed five hits and three runs on three strikeouts. Boucher, Antone and Shannon Smith each collected a hit for the Toppers.

Harris (10-8) was victorious after seven innings of work and allowing just three hits and one run. She also helped her cause in the batting order after collecting two hits and a run.

UAB took a quick 5-0 lead early in game two after Amanda Allen slammed a three-run home run over the left field wall.

The Toppers tallied a run in the fifth on a Sam Cronk groundout that scored Elizabeth Ferrell, but that was the only run WKU could score.

Jennifer Nelson (12-17) won the game on just one run after allowing four hits and Allen collected three hits for the game.

Lauren Caudill (0-2) started her second game on the year, pitching four innings.
