Troy, Ala. — Just a few hours after defeating Florida International 9-1 and being one of only three teams remaining in the Sun Belt Conference tournament the number eight seeded Western Kentucky University softball team fell to Louisiana-Lafayette 3-1 Friday evening.

The Hilltoppers finished the season at 28-30 and ULL improves their record to 45-12 and moves into the championship contest against Louisiana-Monroe at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Gabriele Bridges put the Ragin’ Cajuns up 2-0 in the fourth inning on her solo shot to left field. Louisiana-Lafayette then tacked on another run in the seventh on a home run from Melissa Verda.

WKU did get a run across in the seventh as Rebecca Horesky tripled to right and scored on a Shelby Smith groundout.

Horesky and Lindsay Antone were the only Toppers to collect a hit while Donna Bourgeois (14-4) pitched a complete game while only allowing two hits and one run.

Jennifer Kempf (17-15) took the loss after four innings pitched while giving up only one earned run.
