Bowling Green, Ky. — Western Kentucky University women’s golfer Lauren Scholl needed one extra hole to defeat Morgan Cross in the first round of match play at the Kentucky Women’s State Amateur tournament at the Elizabethtown Country Club Tuesday afternoon.
Scholl qualified for the championship flight after posting a 78 during the qualifying round on Monday. The round ended up seeding her 18th for the event. Cross was seeded 15th and finished second overall in last year’s state amateur.
Former Lady Topper Sarah Colbert lost her first-round match to Laura McGehee 3&1 in the lower bracket of the championship flight. Colbert qualified 22nd after recording a 79 during qualifying action. McGehee was seeded 11th.
Both Lady Toppers will be in action again tomorrow. Scholl will face Karisa Akin — the second overall seed in the field — at 11:16 a.m. (EST) while Colbert will play in the consolation bracket against Erin O’Conner at 10:41 a.m.
