Bowling Green, Ky. — The WKU volleyball team couldn't have envisioned a better start to the season. Not only did they finish the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record but they defeated host Alabama in five sets (25-19, 9-25, 21-25, 25-16, 15-12) to open up the season. The win over the Crimson Tide was the first win for WKU over an SEC team since the Lady Toppers defeated Georgia in 2003 3-2 and set the tone for what could be the best season in school history.
The Lady Toppers followed up the win over Alabama with victories over Iowa (26-24, 24-26, 25-17, 25-17) and Nicholls State (25-10, 25-10, 25-16) on Saturday.
Three-time All-American Megan Argabright also provided a spectacular show finishing the weekend with 42 kills, 73 total attacks and a .493 hitting percentage. The senior also added to her list of accomplishments by being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and opened up her quest for a fourth All-America honor.
Additionally, senior Julia Noe and junior Brittany Bowen also started off the season the right way by being named to the All-Tournament team. Noe finished the weekend with 117 assists and 17 digs and Bowen recorded 27 kills, 50 total attacks and a .400 hitting percentage.
After the first weekend of competition the Lady Toppers lead their opponents in kills, total attacks, attack percentage, kills per set, assists, assists per set, digs, digs per set, and total blocks. On offense the Lady Toppers have 43 more kills than their opponents and on defense the Lady Toppers are shining leading their opponents by 19 digs.
The 2008 season continues this weekend when the Lady Toppers travel to Huntington, W. Va. to take part in the Marshall University Tournament. WKU will hit the court against East Tennessee State on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. before taking on Virginia Tech at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Marshall at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
