Bowling Green, Ky. - After starting the season with a 10-1 record and dominating opponents on the court, the WKU volleyball team was rewarded for their hard work and success by being ranked 15th in the first RKPI poll released today.
The Lady Toppers, who have already defeated five teams in the top 100 on the list, are the highest ranked Sun Belt team in the poll. Five Sun Belt teams are ranked in the top 65, but the Lady Toppers lead the pack of Middle Tennessee, Florida International, Denver and New Orleans. Middle Tennessee, the second highest ranked team, is 25th, followed by Florida International at 40, Denver at 59 and New Orleans at 61.
"First of all, I'm excited for our conference, head coach Travis Hudson said. "To have five teams in the top 65 makes a statement about the level of volleyball that we are playing in this league. Our intent at the beginning of the season was to put together a schedule that would attract national attention and to this point we have been fortunate to take advantage of that."
For the Lady Toppers the compeititon doesn't get any easier from here. After facing two teams ranked in the top 50 this past weekend, the Lady Toppers will travel to Michigan to take on Michigan, Arizona State and Albany in the Michigan/adidas Invitational. In Ann Arbor, the team will face two teams ranked in the top 50 with Michigan ranked 47th and Arizona State right behind WKU at 21st.
"In the coming weeks we will have chances to continue to build our resume," Hudson stated. "With Arizona State at 21 and Michigan at 47 we will have plently of opportunities to show what kind of team we can be."
In addition to a top 15 ranking, the Lady Toppers are excelling on offense and are ranked eighth in the country in hitting percentage. After eleven matches, WKU has an impressive .294 hitting percentage. The Lady Toppers have posted 537 kills on the season and only 175 errors.
