Ann Arbor, Mich. - The Lady Toppers fell for the second time this season to #25 Michigan on the first day of the Michigan/adidas Tournament 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 21-25). WKU, who was plagued with uncharacteristic errors, falls to 10-2 overall this season.
In the first set, the Lady Toppers and Wolverines remained tied early before the Lady Toppers fell behind midway through the match 16-11 after an error by the Lady Toppers. From there, WKU could never recover and the Wolverines took match one after superior offensive plays that resulted in a .360 hitting percentage. WKU, who struggled to set a rhythm offensively, were held to a .182 hitting percentage after eight costly errors.
The Lady Toppers also struggled in the second set offensively posting its lowest hitting percentage of the night with at .162. WKU posted 12 kills but recorded six errors in the loss.
Finally, in the third set after the Lady Toppers took an early lead, Michigan fought back and regained control to outpace WKU in the final minutes.
The Lady Toppers only had two athletes hit above .300 in the match with senior Megan Argabright leading the way. Argabright, who posted 17 of WKU’s 38 kills, finished with a .387 hitting percentage, one assist, one ace, one dig and one block. Defensively, the Lady Toppers were led by senior Kelly Hofmeyer who recorded ten kills.
Overall, the Lady Toppers posted 38 kills, 19 errors, a .192 hitting percentage, 35 assists, two aces, 39 digs and six total blocks. The Wolverines finished the match with 38 kills, 10 errors, a .292 hitting percentage, 37 assists, six aces, 39 digs and 16 total blocks.
The Lady Toppers will resume play in the tournament tomorrow afternoon when they hit the court against Arizona State at 12:30 p.m. CDT. They will conclude play at 4 p.m. against Albany. Live stats for all matches are available at www.mgoblue.com.
