It has been a struggle for Warren East football in recent weeks. But for at least one night, the Raiders looked like the team fans had become accustomed to under head coach Ben Bruni.
Warren East took a 21-7 lead into halftime against Russell County, and stretched its lead in the second half to defeat the Lakers 43-7. The win closes out the Raiders' district slate at 2-2, and guarantees the team a playoff spot in Class 4A.
It was another big night on offense for Shenard Holton. The senior running back recorded 266 total yards and four touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving. Holton's 45-yard touchdown catch from Andrew Alvey in the third quarter put the Raiders ahead 27-7, realistically ending the Lakers' chances of contending for the victory. Holton would later score on a 57-yard run in the fourth quarter, his fourth and final touchdown of the night.
Russell County's offense had some success moving the football, but it would not show up on the scoreboard. The Lakers' only score came late in the second quarter when Bryon Ellis connected with Quinton Warriner for the short touchdown pass.
The Raiders (4-3, 2-2 Class 4A District 2) travel to Owensboro Catholic next week while the Lakers (2-5) visit Somerset.
