Bowling Green, Ky. — The WKU volleyball team could not post a comeback in the final set of the match falling to Cincinnati 3-1 (17-25, 19-25, 25-20, 23-25) to fall to 14-6 overall this season. After falling in the first two sets, the Lady Toppers roared back in set three but could not maintain their dominance in the final set.
The Lady Toppers had no answer for the Bearcats in set one and two committing 10 errors and only 22 kills in the two sets for hitting percentages of .207 and .240 respectively. After hanging close early in both sets, Cincinnati took control dominating on both sides of the ball hitting .438 in the first set and .636 in the second set. The Bearcats posted 16 kills in the first set en route to the win and added 15 more in the second set.
The Lady Toppers found some momentum in the third set shutting down Cincinnati offensively allowing only ten kills and forcing ten errors in the set. Although, the Lady Toppers struggled offensively as well, WKU dominated when it mattered sending the match to a fourth set. After falling behind 3-0 early, the Lady Toppers found some rythum midway through the set extending their lead at one point to 20-14 after an error by Cincinnati.
In the final set, the Lady Toppers returned the favor going ahead 3-0 early but could not hold on after a rally by Cincinnati that gave them the lead at 10-9. After tying the set at 21 after outstanding serves by freshman Lauren Stuckel, the Lady Toppers couldn't hold on being outscored by Cincinnati 4-2 in the final minutes of play.
The Lady Toppers were led by junior Aquila Orr who finished the night with 17 kills, a .517 hitting percentage one dig and two blocks. Overall, the team posted 48 kills, 22 errors, a .211 hitting percentage, 46 assists, eight aces, 42 digs and 16 total blocks.
The Lady Toppers will travel to Denver and North Texas to take on the two Sun Belt foes on Friday and Sunday. First up will be the Pioneers on Friday night at 8 p.m. CDT and the Lady Toppers will compete against North Texas on Sunday at 1 p.m.
