WKU Volleyball Sweeps South Alabama; Improves To 18-9 This Season

Mobile, Ala. — The WKU volleyball team continued their winning ways sweeping South Alabama (25-14, 25-15, 25-21) in the first of two Sun Belt Conference matches on the road this weekend. As a team and individually, the Lady Toppers were unstoppable finishing with hitting percentages of .536, .577 and .367 in three sets. Four Lady Toppers also finished the night with hitting percentages over .500 and three finished the match with a hitting percentage of at least. 600. The team improves their record to 18-9 this season and 7-5 in the Sun Belt while South Alabama falls to 10-11 overall and 4-9 this season in the Sun Belt.

In the first set, the Lady Toppers scored first off an error by South Alabama and gained an early lead in the game that they would never give up. With the Lady Toppers leading 4-3, WKU scored five unanswered points to make it 9-3 and then easily ended the match outscoring the Jaguars 16-11.

Junior Brittany Bowen led the team in kills in set one posting four and senior Megan Argabright and junior Aquila Orr added three a piece. Together, the Lady Toppers posted 18 kills in the set, only three errors and also finished with 17 assists and 12 digs.

Set two also belonged to the Lady Toppers as they posted 17 more kills and only two errors in the set. After letting South Alabama score first off an error by WKU, the Lady Toppers picked up momentum with the score tied at 1-1 and went on another scoring drive that gave them a three point lead. With the Lady Toppers leading 5-3, WKU scored seven consecutive points to extend their lead by seven. From there, South Alabama could never catch up to the Lady Toppers and the second set went to WKU at 25-15. Bowen and Orr were each perfect in the set posting five kills and zero errors.

The final set was the toughest set of the night for the Lady Toppers as South Alabama scored their most points of the night. Once again, WKU struck first but South Alabama retied the game at 1-1 and the Lady Toppers and Jaguars battled in a tough contest until WKU began to pull away midway through the match. The Jaguars gave the Lady Toppers a scare late getting within two points several times but the Lady Toppers were able to hang on for the victory. WKU recorded 14 kills in the set but were able to hold South Alabama to only ten.

Argabright tallied seven kills in the third set and committed only one error for a hitting percentage of .750. Junior Abbie Siljendahl also finished with a .750 hitting percentage adding three kills to the total.

Overall, the Lady Toppers finished the match with 49 kills, a .488 hitting percentage, 45 assists, eight aces, 32 digs and six blocks. South Alabama posted 27 kills, a .268 hitting percentage, 26 assists, one aces, 22 digs and six blocks.

Argabright finished with a match-high 12 kills and a match-high .714 hitting percentage. In addition, she also posted five aces and one assist. Bowen tallied 11 kills in the match and only one error for a .667 hitting percentage while adding two blocks to the team's total. Sophomore Emily Teegarden also had a fantastic night recording seven kills and zero errors for a .636 hitting percentage. Orr added ten kills to the Lady Toppers total and posted two blocks. On defense, senior Kelly Hofmeyer recorded a match-high 18 digs and Siljendahl finished with 11 digs.

The Lady Toppers will conclude their Alabama road trip tomorrow when they visit Troy for a 1 p.m. match.
