MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Stefan Welsh hit a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to give Arkansas a 79-77 win over South Alabama on Wednesday night in head coach John Pelphrey's return to the school he led to the 2006 Sun Belt Conference tournament championship.
Trailing the Jaguars by four points with less than four minutes to play, the Razorbacks (3-1) used 3-point baskets by Welsh and Rotnei Clarke in the final 47 seconds to give Arkansas coach John Pelphrey the win over his former team in the Coors Classic.
Courtney Fortson scored a game-high 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range. Welsh added 24 points for the Razorbacks.
South Alabama (2-3) was led by former Kentucky Mr. Basketball Domonic Tilford with 23 points, including six 3-pointers. Brandon Davis added 18 points.
Arkansas trailed the Jaguars 45-44 at halftime, then South Alabama increased the lead to 10. But the Razorbacks closed the gap to 66-65 at the 8:36 mark, holding the Jaguars to just two points in 4 minutes.
