Bowling Green, Ky. – The WKU volleyball team will head to Champaign, Ill. to take on Cincinnati in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Volleyball Tournament, the NCAA announced today. The Lady Toppers (26-9) will face off against the Bearcats on Fri. Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. CST as part of the University Park, Penn. Regional.
WKU earned the Sun Belt Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Sun Belt title earlier this month in Miami, Fla. Sweeping all three teams they faced in the tournament, the Lady Toppers defeated New Orleans in the championship match to win the title after taking down Denver and Middle Tennessee.
Earlier this season, the Lady Toppers and Cincinnati faced off in Bowling Green where the Bearcats took down WKU in four sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-20, 25-23). In the match on Friday, the Lady Toppers will be the home team with the winner of the match facing off against the winner of the Illinois vs. Milwaukee match on Sat. Dec. 6.
The Sun Belt will send a conference record three teams to the tournament this year after Florida International and Middle Tennessee received at large bids. Also on Friday, Florida International will take on Colorado State while Middle Tennessee will battle Miami (Ohio). Florida International and Middle Tennessee are both part of the Fort Collins, Colo.
