BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU sophomore forward Sergio Kerusch has been named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. It is the first career selection for the Memphis, Tenn. native and the second in the past three weeks for the Hilltoppers. Joining AJ Slaughter (Dec. 2) and Orlando Mendez-Valdez (Jan. 5) as previous WKU honorees this season, Kerusch is the 45th selection for the Toppers in 26 years of SBC affiliation.
In leading WKU to a pair of Sun Belt Conference wins this week, Kerusch posted back-to-back double doubles, averaging 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds as the Hilltoppers regained sole possession of first place in the SBC East Division standings with wins over Middle Tennessee and New Orleans
Coming off the bench in both games, and battling a groin injury, the newcomer shot 60.0 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from the three-point line, and 77.8 percent at the charity stripe. In a huge win over rival Middle Tennessee, Kerusch had 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with 10 rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes of action, ending the Blue Raiders seven-game winning streak.
On Saturday, Kerusch recorded his team-leading fifth double double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds (including six on the offensive end) as WKU downed New Orleans 70-60. On the season, Kerusch is averaging 10.5 points and a team-leading 6.9 rebounds per game.
WKU will put its perfect 8-0 mark at E.A. Diddle Arena on the line Thursday, January 22 when the Toppers close out their three-game homestand with Louisiana-Lafayette at 7:00 PM. The Toppers are 60-5 at Diddle Arena versus Sun Belt Conference foes since 2000.
