Bowling Green, Ky. — Senior Rebecca Horesky and junior Lindsay Antone picked up their first honors of the 2009 season by being selected to the Sun Belt Conference Preseason All-Sun Belt Team, the league office announced today. Horesky, a two-time All-Sun Belt selection, was honored at third base while Antone was selected at first base.
A 2008 First Team selection, Horesky completed the 2008 season as one of the top players in the league. With an overall .311 hitting percentage, she racked up 27 runs on 51 hits. Additionally, she posted eight doubles, three triples, nine homeruns and 30 RBIs while recording a .561 slugging percentage. Currently, she is ranked in the top ten in eight WKU career hitting categories and in the top ten in five season hitting categories. Last season in the SBC, Horesky finished with a .250 hitting percentage or better in 11 games while posting an overall conference hitting percentage of .273. At third base, she only committed four errors in 22 games.
Antone finished the 2008 season leading the Lady Toppers in batting average (.367), slugging percentage (.672), runs, hits, doubles and homeruns. In 2008, she recorded 33 runs on 66 hits while posting ten doubles, 15 homeruns and 42 RBIs. In conference games, Antone finished with a .351 hitting percentage and posted 26 hits, two doubles and 20 RBIs while being nearly perfect in the field with only one error. She currently ranks first in slugging percentage on WKU’s all-time career list and is in the top five in two other categories. She also ranks first in home runs in a season in the WKU record book while also ranking first in total bases and slugging percentage. Additionally, she is ranked in the top five in three other WKU categories.
The Lady Toppers were also selected to finish seventh this season in the Sun Belt Conference. With 33 points, WKU is right behind sixth place Middle Tennessee who racked up 34 points in the preseason poll. Sun Belt Conference champion and 2008 College World Series champion, Louisiana-Lafayette, was picked to win the conference title again this season and received 81 points and all nine first place votes in the poll. Following Louisiana-Lafayette was Florida Atlantic in second place with 67 points, Troy in third place with 59 points, Florida International in fourth with 53 points and North Texas in fifth with 44 points. Rounding out the bottom two spots in eighth and ninth place were ULM and South Alabama who received 23 and 11 points respectively.
WKU will kick-off the 2009 season this weekend when they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to compete in the Southern Miss Tournament. Action begins on Saturday, Feb. 7 when the Lady Toppers battle Central Arkansas at 9 a.m. CST and Arkansas at 11:30 a.m. WKU will conclude action on Sunday, Feb. 8 when they will face Samford at 10 a.m. and finally Central Arkansas at 3 p.m.
