BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — For the Western Kentucky University baseball team not much went wrong on Friday defeating Albany in both games of the double header allowing only two runs during the 16 innings of play.
WKU (3-1) downed Albany 11-0 in the first of the two games and 23-2 in the second.
In the second game Matt Hightower held the Great Danes to one hit in 6.0 innings of work to pick up his first victory of the season. The lefty struck out three batters and retired 16 consecutive batters.
WKU scored in all but two innings in the second contest of the night. The Hilltoppers posted three in the first with J.B. Paxson driving in Hightower and Terrance Dayleg on a single and Matt Payton scoring on a wild pitch.
Albany was able to hold the potent Hilltopper offense in check during the second inning with pitcher Dave Kubiak striking out one and getting two to fly out.
However, in the bottom of the third, WKU pounded across six runs including Chad Cregar's first home run of the 2009 season. His shot over the wall in right-center scored Dayleg — who reached on a single. Paxson posted his third RBI of the evening when he drove in Wade Gaynor off a double. Kes Carter posted a single along with Jake Wells — both of which scored in the inning. The bottom half saw WKU post five hits and push across six Hilltopper runners.
WKU proceeded to score three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth before blasting eight runs in the seventh. Matt Bracken led off the inning reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Jared Andreoli walked and Drew Morgan was hit by a pitch to load the bases for C.J. Wamsley. Wamsley took a Mike Baltera and drove the ball down the right field line for a Hilltopper grand slam. Logan Robbins was hit by a pitch and Ryan Hook singled up the middle to advance Robbins to second. Casey Dykes singled to left advancing the runners. Carter kept the Hilltopper base runners on the move with a single down the left field line that scored Robbins and Hook. Bracken singled to center field to reach base for the second time in the inning before Andreoli doubled down the left field line picking up two RBI. The Hilltoppers posted six hits in the inning and eight runs.
Albany got on the board for the first time in the two games in the seventh inning when Ryan Gugel doubled to right center off Ross Hammonds to score Dave West.
The Great Danes recorded a second run in the top of the eighth after Sean Donovan singled in Zach Kraham.
The Hilltoppers took down the Great Danes in the first game 11-0 in seven innings with no real threat of the opponents scoring thanks to Matt Ridings throwing 6.0 innings of work allowing only three hits while striking out two. The win was Ridings second win of the season and has yet to allow a run in his two starts.
WKU scored runs in all but one inning including opening up the contest with four runs in the first three innings. Payton led off the game with a double. Dayleg added a single. Payton scored off a passed ball to put WKU up 1-0 heading into the second inning.
The Hilltoppers added another run in the bottom of the second after Andreoli reached on an error by the Great Danes shortstop to lead off. Wells advanced him over on a base knock. Jeremy Coleman knocked in the Andreoli to put WKU up 2-0 heading in to the third.
Dayleg led off the third with a hit-by-pitch and ended up scoring off a Matt Rice double. Prior to Rice's at bat, Gaynor singled to move Dayleg over to third base.
Albany was able to hold WKU from scoring in the fourth only facing four Hilltopper batters.
WKU added three runs in the bottom of the fifth off three hits in the inning. Hightower, Cregar and Gaynor each scored in the inning with Gaynor, Andreoli and Wells adding three singles.
The Hilltoppers added four more runs in the sixth before the game was called after WKU advanced their lead to 11-0 through the inning.
The Toppers and Great Danes will play the third game of the series at 1 p.m. (CST) on Saturday afternoon.
