BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Western Kentucky University's Wade Gaynor has been named the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. The junior third baseman hit .474 and slugged 1.000 as the Hilltoppers went 4-1 during the week. It is the first career selection for Gaynor and the 24th SBC Player of the Week for the Toppers since the league began the weekly award in 1985.
Gaynor keyed the Hilltoppers offensive onslaught this week, going 9-for-19 at the plate while making a number of spectacular defensive players at the hot corner. The Hawesville, Ky. native had multiple hits in four of five games, recording an on-base percentage of .565, scoring 10 times, and driving in eight RBI. As a team, the Toppers erupted for 71 runs in just 36.0 innings of action.
On Wednesday at Vanderbilt, Gaynor went 2-for-4 with one double, one run scored, and two RBI. In the Hilltoppers doubleheader against Albany on Friday, Gaynor was 4-for-8 with six runs scored, two RBI, two walks, one double, and one triple.
In Sunday's shortened doubleheader, playing 12.0 total innings, the preseason All-Conference honoree went 3-for-7 with four RBI, three runs scored, and smacked two home runs versus the Great Danes. On the season, Gaynor is batting .391 while slugging a team-high .826.
