A day after announcing three would-be returnees won't be back in the fold, we now know Western Kentucky University will also be without one of its two would-be spring signees.
Newark (N.J.) NIA School forward David Laury has backed out of his verbal commitment to the Hilltoppers and will instead sign with Morehead State according to Vincent Robinson, his coach at the NIA School.
Robinson said Laury made the decision last week.
"He and Kenneth Faried (Morehead State's second-leading scorer and the nation's third-leading rebounder in 2008-09) are childhood friends and his prep school teammate (Joe Swift) is going there," Robinson told WBKO via telephone Tuesday. "It had nothing to do with WKU."
Despite saying that, Robinson added that Laury's initial doubt with WKU came from a perceived lack of interest on the school's part. Robinson estimated WKU and Laury "didn't really communicate" for a two-month period during the basketball season, during which time Laury opened up to the idea of signing with another school according to Robinson.
"During that time period, he just felt like that they really didn't want him as bad as he thought they wanted him," said Robinson. "Kenneth and Joe started talking to him and that led to his decision."
Robinson also said postseason success on the part of Morehead State made it an attractive destination. The Eagles won the Ohio Valley Conference tournament title, then beat Alabama State in the NCAA Tournament's opening round game before losing to top-seeded Louisville in the Midwest Region first round.
The 6-foot-8 Laury originally committed to WKU in December after attending the Hilltoppers' home win over Georgia. At that time, Robinson said Laury was impressed with E.A. Diddle Arena and the Hilltoppers' record of graduating players.
"(Laury) said the atmosphere at the Georgia game was incredible," Robinson said in a telephone interview Dec. 11th. "Everything there is about basketball... He also liked that WKU was the only school in the NCAA tournament with a 100 percent graduation rate - that was really impressive to him."
Laury's defection leaves the Hilltoppers with just one unsigned commitment - San Diego (Calif.) shooting guard Terrence Boyd. Boyd can sign with the Hilltoppers as early as Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the month-long spring signing period.
WKU signed three players during the fall period: Vestavia Hills (Ala.) guard Jordan Swing, Orlando (Fla.) forward William Green and Argyle (Texas) guard Caden Dickerson.
