(Bowling Green, KY ) – In their first extra-innings game of the season, the Hot Rods (10-9) got a run-scoring infield single off the bat of second baseman Isaias Velasquez to beat the Augusta GreenJackets 3-2 in ten innings on Tuesday night. Velasquez’ single came off Augusta (6-13) reliever Eric Stolp, scoring Jason Tweedy, who began the winning rally with a walk against losing pitcher Daniel Runzler (0-1).
The Hot Rods rally in the tenth made a winner out of Josh Satow (1-0) giving him a win he really had to work for. Satow came on in relief in the last of the eighth inning after lefty Neil Schenk loaded the bases with a one-out intentional walk. Satow would retire both batters he faced in the eighth to get the Hot Rods out of the jam.
In the last of the eighth, trailing 2-1, Bowling Green mounted its very short comeback. With one down, right fielder Jason Corder came through with his first home run of the season, sneaking it just inside the left field foul pole to tie it at 2.
After neither team could score in the ninth, the GreenJackets came very close to a go-ahead rally in the tenth. Facing Satow, left fielder Ben Woodbury stroked a single to right before advancing to third on an infield single by DH CJ Ziegler coupled with a throwing error by Satow. The Hot Rods lefty wouldn’t buckle though, retiring the next three batters on a foul out and two strikeouts to set up Velasquez’ heroics in the bottom of the tenth.
Both starting pitchers had their best starts of the season but did not figure into the decision. Hot Rods starter Shane Dyer (0-1) pitched six shutout innings, his longest outing of the season. He only allowed three hits and two walks while striking out two. On the other side, Augusta right-hander Kyle Nicholson turned in 7.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on just five hit. Before a home run to Jason Corder in the eighth he allowed just one base runner between the third and seventh innings. He finished with four K’s and just one walk.
The four-game series continues on Wednesday morning with Education Day at Bowling Green Ballpark. It will feature a match-up of lefties with the Hot Rods’ Frank De Los Santos (1-0, 2.40) facing Augusta’s Ari Ronick (0-1, 4.97). First pitch is 11:05 AM.
