(Bowling Green, KY) – First baseman Mike Sheridan extended his hitting streak to a season-best five games but the Hot Rods (10-10) weren’t able to muster much else against Augusta lefty Ari Ronick (1-1), losing 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon. Ronick allowed just one hit over a season-high seven shut-out innings to help Augusta (7-13) even this four game series at one game each.
Hot Rods left-hander Frank De Los Santos was outdueled by Ronick, pitching five innings for the fourth consecutive time this season. Coming off his first win of the season, De Los Santos (1-1) took the loss by giving up two earned runs on six hits. The first run scored on a sacrifice fly by DH Josh Mazzola, plating center fielder Dom Duggan to make it 1-0 in the first. An inning later catcher Matt Klimas singled in second baseman Juan Perez to give the GreenJackets a 2-0 lead.
That was more than enough for Ronick and the GreenJackets’ bullpen. Ronick gave up just the one hit to Sheridan, at one point retiring 11 in a row during the middle innings. Relievers Justin Fitzgerald and Trey Webb each worked a scoreless inning to preserve the win for Ronick.
For the Hot Rods, relief pitchers Diego Echeverria (2 IP) and Tommy Rafferty (1 IP) allowed a combined five runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Marquis Fleming worked a scoreless ninth, lowing his ERA to 1.04 in six outings.
Game three of the series is Thursday night at 6:35 PM.
