Bowling Green, Ky. - The 91st season of Western Kentucky University football - and the first as a full-fledged member of the Football Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A) - gets underway as players report for fall camp on Sunday (Aug. 9).
The first official practice of the fall will be held from 3:45-6 p.m. (CDT) on Monday, beginning a week of late afternoon practices to get the practice season started. The first two-a-day practice will put a wrap on the first week of camp as the Toppers hit the field for a pair of workouts on Saturday, Aug. 15.
The second week of camp will be highlighted by two-a-day practices on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (Aug. 17, 19, and 21), and the team's annual media day on Aug. 20. The first of two Saturday scrimmages will take place on Aug. 22, kicking off at 11:21 a.m. - the same time WKU will kick off its season opener at Tennessee two weeks later.
After a similar schedule in week three, fall camp will wrap up with the inaugural WKU Football Family Fun Day on Aug. 29. Activities will begin at 3 p.m. with a three-hour Fun Zone consisting of games, face painting, balloon and inflatable. At 3:40, Hilltopper players and coaches will take part in the traditional Topperwalk down the Avenue of Champions into Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium. An autograph session will take place on the field from 4:30-5:30 p.m., with the annual fall mock game kicking off at 6:30 p.m. After the two-hour game, a fireworks show will put a cap on the day's activities at 8:30 p.m.
After opening the season at Tennessee, the Hilltoppers return to Smith Stadium for the first of six home games during the '09 campaign on Sept. 12 when South Florida pays a visit. The home slate also includes a visit from Central Arkansas, and home Sun Belt Conference games against Florida International, Louisiana-Lafayette, Troy and Arkansas State.
