Bowling Green, Ky. - Three offensive players and one senior defender were named team captains for Saturday's home opener against South Florida. Wide receivers Jake Gaebler and Quinterrance Cooper, running back Marell Booker and linebacker Darvis McBride will captain the Hilltoppers against the Bulls.
Gaebler, a senior from Mundelein, Ill., was limited to just one catch in last week's season opener at Tennessee, but still has his sights set on WKU's career receptions record. He is now 24 catches away from breaking Curtis Hamilton's mark of 149 receptions set during the 2007 season. Gaebler also needs just 14 receiving yards to move into the career top 10 in that category.
Booker saw limited action in the season opener, but provides another option in a talented Topper backfield. The Louisville, Ky., senior is coming off a season that saw him rush for 285 yards and three touchdowns in 2008. His eight career rushing scores are the second-highest active total for WKU behind Tyrell Hayden's 15 TDs.
Cooper led the Hilltoppers with 21 receiving yards on a pair of catches against the Volunteers. A junior from St. Augustine, Fla., Cooper has now caught 44 passes from 511 yards and four touchdowns in 24 games as a Hilltopper. He is also one of five projected starters from the state of Florida this week against the Bulls.
McBride is also a Sunshine State native, hailing from Fort Myers, Fla. The senior linebacker missed last week's contest due to illness, but will be back in the fold on Saturday against USF. McBride finished with 50 total tackles in 11 games last season, and has registered 75 stops over his three-year career. He was also credited with 2.5 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and an interception in 2008.
Saturday's WKU-USF contest will kick off at 6:30 p.m. (CST) at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
